Stop Mobile Gift Card Frustration: Boost Shopify Checkout Conversion
Hey fellow store owners! Let's talk about something that might be costing you sales and frustrating your customers, especially those lovely folks trying to redeem a gift card on their phone. I recently saw a fantastic discussion in the Shopify community that really highlighted a common pain point, and the solutions shared are gold.
It all started with @Megan56 from Activate Foods, who brought up a classic scenario: customers on mobile having a tough time finding where to enter their gift card at checkout. The field was tucked away under a drop arrow, and to make matters worse, the label only said “discount code,” not “gift card.” As Megan pointed out, gift card recipients are often new to your store, so they’re not familiar with your checkout flow. This isn’t just a small snag; it’s a significant friction point that can lead to abandoned carts and a less-than-stellar first impression.

On mobile version - customers are having difficulty locating the gift card section. It is hidden under a drop arrow. The navigation only says “discount code” It should also say “gift Card” for people to click on it.
What feedback do you want?
Can you please add “gift card” to the navigatin prompt? Or make it more visible to customers. Customers using a gift card are often new so aren’t familiar with what sections to press on to open up more information.

Luckily, the community jumped in with some fantastic, actionable advice. It turns out, there are a few straightforward ways to tackle this, making your mobile checkout experience much smoother for everyone.
Solution 1: Clarify the Checkout Label (The Quick Win)
This was the most popular and easiest fix suggested by several members, including @One-Sun1995, @gotinker, and @Maximus3. The core idea is to simply change the text “Discount code” to “Discount code or gift card” so customers immediately know where to go.
How to Update Your Checkout Label:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
- Next to your live theme, click the “...” menu.
- Select Edit default theme content.
- Click on the Checkout & system tab (or just use the search bar).
- In the search bar, type “Discount” or “Add discount”.
- Locate the field “Add a discount code” (or similar, depending on your theme) and change its label to something like “Discount code or gift card”.
- Click Save.
As @One-Sun1995 pointed out, this label is often the only clue a first-time gift card recipient gets on mobile, where the field is typically nested within a collapsed order summary. Reload your checkout on your phone after saving to confirm the new wording shows up!
@Maximus3 even shared some helpful screenshots:
Solution 2: Proactive Guidance via Email (The Smart Move)
This is a brilliant insight from @DanielAnderson. He highlighted that gift card users haven’t seen your checkout before. Why wait for them to get stuck? You can guide them before they even reach the problem!
How to Edit Your Gift Card Notification Email:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Notifications.
- Find and click on the “Gift card notification” template.
- Add a single, clear line of text to the email that instructs them on how to redeem their gift card, especially on mobile. Something like: “When checking out on mobile, tap ‘Add discount code or gift card’ in the order summary to apply your balance.”
- Click Save.
This simple addition to the email they’ll have open in front of them does a lot of heavy lifting. It sets expectations and provides a clear path, preventing frustration before it even begins.
Solution 3: Force the Discount Field Open (For Some Stores)
@gotinker brought up another interesting point: the discount/gift card field is often hidden inside a collapsed order summary by default on mobile. While the label change helps, you might be able to force it open.
How to Always Show the Discount Code Field:
- In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout.
- Under the “Checkout configuration” section, click Customize checkout.
- In the checkout editor, navigate to the Order summary section.
- Look for an option to “Always show discount code field” and turn it on.
- Click Save.
Important Note: @gotinker mentioned that Shopify’s documentation states this toggle only appears if you are using the “three-page checkout layout.” So, if you don’t see this option, it might not be available for your current checkout configuration.
These solutions, collectively, create a much more welcoming and intuitive experience for your gift card customers. It’s a fantastic example of how small changes in your Shopify settings can make a huge difference in customer satisfaction and, ultimately, your conversion rates. Paying attention to these subtle friction points, especially on mobile, is crucial for any e-commerce business. Big shout-out to Megan56 for raising the question and to the community for sharing such practical advice!
