Mastering Shopify Returns: Get Clear on Label Costs and Unlock More Shipping Choices

Hey everyone! As a Shopify expert who spends a lot of time diving into the community forums, I often see recurring themes that really resonate with store owners. Recently, a post by YC3 from Yoga Crow caught my eye, and it sparked a great internal discussion about a couple of key pain points around managing returns in Shopify. YC3, who runs an online store selling premium men’s activewear, hit on two features that I know many of you have wished for, and it’s definitely worth talking about.

The Return Label Cost Conundrum: Where’s That Number?

YC3’s first point was a big one: “It would be helpful to see the cost paid for return label ideally up in the order return section otherwise; in the timeline.” They perfectly articulated the frustration of having to “dig through billing history to attempt to locate such information which is both inconvenient and timely as I must deduct the price from any refund/return.”

Honestly, who hasn’t felt this? When you’re processing a return and need to subtract the label cost, having to jump out of the order screen, navigate to billing, find the right bill, and then manually calculate can be a real time-sink. It’s a small friction point, but it adds up, especially for stores with a higher volume of returns.

How to Find Your Return Label Costs (The Current Way)

While we wait for Shopify to hopefully integrate this directly into the order timeline, here’s the current process for finding those return label costs:

  1. Log into your Shopify Admin.
  2. Go to Settings (bottom left corner).
  3. Click on Billing in the left-hand menu.
  4. Select Bills.
  5. Here, you’ll see a list of your Shopify bills. You’ll need to open the relevant bill (it often correlates with the date you created the return label) and locate the shipping label charges. Return labels are usually listed alongside your outbound shipping labels.

Yes, it’s not ideal. It requires a bit of detective work to match a specific return label cost to a specific order, especially if you’re processing multiple labels around the same time. This is exactly why YC3’s suggestion for it to be visible “up in the order return section” or “in the timeline” is so spot on. It would streamline a crucial part of the refund process.

Expanding Your Return Carrier Horizon: Beyond USPS Priority

YC3’s second point was equally valid: “It would be helpful if Shopify offered the same suite of shipping options as when orders are initially shipped for RETURN shipping. Currently, I am only able to use USPS when creating a return label and only PRIORITY shipping service is offered…what is the rational for this?”

This is a common limitation store owners encounter. Shopify’s built-in label purchasing system often has preferred integrations, and for many US-based merchants, USPS is the primary carrier offered, with Priority being the default or only service for returns. The “rational” often boils down to Shopify’s negotiated rates and the carrier integrations they prioritize for simplicity and cost-effectiveness within their platform.

However, this doesn’t work for everyone. Depending on your products (size, weight, value) or your customer’s location, USPS Priority might not be the most economical, fastest, or even most reliable option. Sometimes you need FedEx, UPS, or even a regional carrier, and you might prefer a slower, cheaper service for a non-urgent return.

Beyond Built-In: Managing Returns with More Carrier Choices

Since Shopify’s native return label options can be restrictive, here are a few ways many store owners manage to offer more flexibility:

  1. Use Third-Party Return Apps: The Shopify App Store is full of robust return management apps (e.g., Loop Returns, Returnly, AfterShip Returns Center). Many of these integrate with multiple carriers and allow you to generate labels for various services, giving you much more control and even automating the return process for your customers. They often come with a monthly fee, but the time savings and improved customer experience can be well worth it.
  2. Purchase Labels Directly from Carrier Websites: If you only need occasional flexibility, you can bypass Shopify’s label system entirely. Go to UPS.com, FedEx.com, or DHL.com (or your preferred carrier’s site), purchase a return label there, and then email it directly to your customer. This gives you full control over carrier and service options, but it’s a manual process.
  3. Integrate with Shipping Software: If you use a shipping solution like ShipStation, ShippingEasy, or similar platforms for your outbound orders, check if they also support return label generation. These platforms typically have broader carrier integrations and can often handle returns more flexibly than Shopify’s native tools.

Each of these options has its pros and cons regarding cost, automation, and complexity, but they all offer a way around the USPS Priority limitation.

Making Your Voice Heard: Requesting Features from Shopify

YC3’s post is a perfect example of how to highlight needed features. Shopify does listen to its community! If these issues – seeing return label costs directly in the order timeline and expanding return shipping carrier options – resonate with you, I strongly encourage you to do two things:

  • Upvote existing threads: Search the Shopify Community forums for similar suggestions and “upvote” them. The more votes a feature request gets, the more attention it draws from the Shopify product team.
  • Create your own detailed post: If you can’t find an existing thread that perfectly matches your concern, create your own, just like YC3 did. Provide specific examples of how the lack of the feature impacts your business.

Ultimately, these kinds of improvements are about efficiency and better control for us, the store owners. Automating the deduction of return label costs and having more flexibility in carrier choice would save countless hours and allow for a more tailored and professional return experience for our customers. Let’s keep pushing for these kinds of thoughtful enhancements!
