Shopify Studio Theme: Easily Connect Product Descriptions to Collapsible Rows (No Code Needed!)

Hey store owners! Let's talk about product descriptions. We all know how crucial they are for converting browsers into buyers, right? But sometimes, getting them to display just right, especially in modern themes with dynamic sections, can feel like navigating a maze. I recently followed a fantastic discussion in the Shopify community that perfectly illustrates this, and I wanted to share the insights with you.

Our fellow merchant, LByrne88, was wrestling with their Shopify Studio theme. They had an "About This Tee" collapsible row on their product pages and wanted it to automatically pull in each product's existing {{ product.description }}. Sounds straightforward, but there was a catch: they needed to preserve all the lovely formatting – paragraph spacing, bold text, the works. Shopify Support had even suggested a "small Liquid/custom theme-code change," which can be daunting for many of us. Plus, with 105 products, manually copying descriptions into metafields was definitely a no-go.

The "No Compatible Fields" Roadblock

LByrne88's initial problem was that when they tried to connect the collapsible row's content to a dynamic source, the native Product > Description option simply wasn't showing up. Instead, they saw "No compatible fields." What *was* showing was a custom "description" metafield that Shopify Support had previously created. This led to a lot of head-scratching and the thought that custom code was the only way.

This is where our amazing community stepped in! Moeed and Maximus3 quickly jumped into the thread with some excellent advice, pointing out that "you don't really need to do any code changes in this. It's in fact quite easy from theme editor since you can connect {{ product.description }} from there."

The Simple Solution: Connecting Dynamic Sources Correctly

It turned out the solution was right there in the theme editor, but a tiny detail was being missed. LByrne88 was understandably looking for "Description" directly under "Template," but the path is a little more specific. Maximus3, with some clear screenshots, showed the exact sequence of clicks needed. This is a common pitfall – sometimes the most obvious solution is hidden by a slightly different UI path than we expect.

Here's how to connect your collapsible row to the native product description in your Shopify Studio theme, preserving all your formatting, no code required:

  1. Go to your Shopify Admin: Navigate to Online Store > Themes.
  2. Customize your Theme: Click the "Customize" button for your Studio theme.
  3. Select a Product Page: In the theme editor preview, navigate to a product page. You can usually do this by using the dropdown at the top of the editor and selecting "Products" then "Default product" (or any specific product).
  4. Find your Collapsible Row: In the left sidebar, locate the "Collapsible row" block you want to connect (e.g., "About This Tee"). Click on it to open its settings.
  5. Connect Dynamic Source for "Row content": Look for the "Row content" field. To the right of this field, you'll see a small dynamic source icon (often looks like a stack of circles or a database icon). Click on it.
  6. Navigate to Product Description: This is the crucial step that LByrne88 initially missed. Instead of looking directly for "Description" under "Template," you need to do this:

Click the arrow next to "Template" (or the main dynamic source icon if it's the first time connecting). Then, from the options presented, choose Product.

Finally, select Description. This will connect the collapsible row directly to your product's native description field.

  7. Save your changes!

If you previously connected a custom metafield, you might need to "Remove dynamic source" first, as Maximus3 suggested, before re-connecting to the native Product Description.

Bulk Importing with Hextom & Preserving Formatting

Once LByrne88 successfully made this connection, the next piece of the puzzle was bulk updating all 105 product descriptions. They asked if "Hextrom Bulk Edit can pull the product descriptions into a collapsible row?" Maximus3 clarified that "If your bulk editor puts the description in the Product Description field, and your collapsible row connects to the Product Description, yes."

This is key! Hextom (or any robust CSV import tool) can absolutely populate the *native* product description field with formatted text. Because the collapsible row is now dynamically connected to that native field, all the spacing and bolding will be automatically pulled in and displayed correctly. LByrne88 later confirmed their success: "I finally got it to work properly. And Hexton was able to import all of the descriptions again with the correct spacing and bolding."

This whole thread is a fantastic reminder that often, the "complex" problems we face in Shopify themes have simpler, built-in solutions – we just need to know exactly where to click. It also highlights the power of the Shopify community, where store owners help each other navigate these little quirks and save hours (or even days!) of frustration. So, next time you're feeling stuck, remember to check those dynamic source connectors carefully. And if you're looking to get started with your own online store, Shopify makes it incredibly easy to set up and customize your store, often with these powerful features already baked in!
